Hawai'i 2026: Highlights
A week in Maui, doing almost nothing—and loving it.
Favourite things
• The smell of plumeria in the air
• Really hitting the "Restart" button!
• Watching birds all day: mynas, doves, cardinals, chickens, and more
• Daily turtle sightings from the beach
• Spectacular sunrises, sunsets, and a full moon over the ocean
• Kona coffee—yeah it's expensive... and GOOD!
• SEA CUCUMBERS!

Sounds
More than the views, I remember the sounds:
• Ocean surf: the house seemed to magnify the sound. Sounded like a machine!
• Trade winds through palm fronds: Sounded like pelting rain.
• Constant birdsong
• The deep, relaxing rumble of the sea: trying to replicate this with a fish tank and pond pump in my office: Not my best experiment.

Wildlife Encounters
• Snorkeled with sea turtles
• Watched turtles bask on the beach
• Observed bird courtship dances
• Returned several sea cucumbers to the water
• Finally saw Hawai'i's famous free-roaming chickens

• Dramamine really forces you to shift to "vacation mode"
